Getting to conference

The CCNZ conference for 2025 is in Matamata.

Matamata is a charming rural town located in the Waikato region of New Zealand’s North Island. Nestled at the base of the picturesque Kaimai Ranges, it sits roughly halfway between Hamilton and Tauranga—about a 45-minute drive from each. Known for its lush farmland and rolling green hills, Matamata has become internationally famous as the home of the Hobbiton Movie Set from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film trilogies.

The name Matamata comes from te reo Māori and is said to mean “headland” or “point”. One interpretation links it to “mata”, meaning face or edge, often referring to a prominent feature in the landscape. It reflects the area’s significance as a lookout point or strategic location for early Māori settlers.

Today, Matamata blends its rich Māori heritage and farming roots with a thriving tourism scene, welcoming visitors from around the world to experience both its history and cinematic magic.
